Well, hello, Kim! Here I am in my hotel room in Topeka in the same
symposium afterglow.
I wanted to also state that there's a common theme between the humanizing
legal ed conference and the one I attended on Friday - the California
Dispute Resolution Council meeting, at which Pauline Tesler, Mickey Katz,
Bill Andrews, Gary Weiner and I talked about Collaborative Practice, both
the reality in family, and the promise in other areas of law.
The attorneys at CDRC wanted to know "how can you get CL into the law
schools" and the law school innovators at the Topeka symposium wanted to
know "how can we bring CL & other comprehensive law skills into the
curriculum?"
Norma gave a fabulous presenter on her efforts bring CL into law schools.
As we go along, we will try to foster additional conversations (most likely
bridge calls) between innovators in law schools and those in this community
who are willing to be ambassadors and/or teachers for collaborative practice
and other 'comprehensive law' vectors.

Hi all,
I'm writing from Topeka, Kansas where we've just finished the Humanizing
Legal Education conference, a group of about 100 (mostly) law professors and
administrators from three countries, representing 50 different law schools.
Washburn Law School hosted the conference. Many of you may know that the
American Association of Law Schools recently created a Balance in Legal
Education section; Larry Krieger and Ken Sheldon have some ground-breaking
research on well-being in legal education; several prestigious reports have
recommended the reform of legal education. The Humanizing Legal Ed topic has
come to the attention of the mainstream! You'd all have been proud of Norma
Trusch's panel presentation on collaborative law, one of the more popular
break-out sessions this morning. Jeanne Fahey was our moderator. I talked
about restorative justice and Bruce Winick talked about therapeutic
jurisprudence. We followed a plenary by Susan Daicoff on comprehensive law.
The connection between humanizing legal education and humanizing the
practice of law was clear.
Besides our upcoming IACP conference, the Association of Conflict Resolution
Conference (the majority of whose members are lawyers) will be held
overlapping Toronto. The Memphis Bar is hosting a conference called "Lawyers
as Peacemakers" starting on Sunday, 10/28. (I'll be leaving the conference
early to go there to lead an introductory program to Collaborative Law.)
Touro Law School in New York is offering "Lawyers as Healers" on November 4
and 5. And many of you know that last week, there was the Innovative
Lawyering program in Missouri.
I know many of you see collaborative law as part of a bigger movement and
