In Richmond, VA, Nancy Cook teaches Collaborative Law at the University of
Richmond Law School each spring. During the course she invites mental health
professionals to come to the class and answer questions about our roles as
coaches and child specialists and we generally role play with the students.
I imagine teaching such a class at a community college might attract members
of the community who are considering or planning divorce. This would be a
wonderful opportunity to help the community understand the different approaches
to divorce and possibly other applications of a collaborative team approach
such as wills and estates or elder planning. It would be an entirely different
course then might be offered at a law school or during basic training. It
could be an interesting opportunity to talk about not only collaborative law,
but the finances of marriage and divorce, the psychology of couples and
families, and the sociology of marriage and divorce.
