Well, if this is a Woody praise-fest, I should chime in as well. Having gone to
The Who concert on Friday, I feel like one of Tommy's disciples.
I learned a lot from Woody and have tried to follow his great teachings.
Because of Woody, I decided a year ago not to accept any more litigated cases.
This has resulted in me getting more Collaborative cases, but the biggest
change is my focus on helping my clients resolve their differences without
going to court, even if the case is not Collaborative. That requires me to
further develop skills other than my writing skills and my skills of
persuasion. If we, as attorneys, really want to help our clients, we need to
not only help our clients get the best possible results under the
circumstances, we need to help them get through the process in the best
possible way. Being a peacemaker enables me to do that, even in difficult
cases. I think that the public is crying out for the skills that we can provide
to them. I firmly believe that eventually, the litigators are going to have to
do that as well. Therein lies my faith that we are in the midst of a cultural
change and those of you who are leaders in your Collaborative communities will
be the leaders in this overall movement to provide a better process and a
better result for our clients.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks for this, Dona.
I've been working for 2 years to try to get people to attend one of these
here in Chicago. I'm hoping this year and 3d time is the charm.
To add to what you've stated so eloquently. I think that what makes this
work both powerful and 'unappealing' is the fact that it is focused directly on
the Paradigm Shift. The essential questions of how YOU have do change and what
you DO has to change IF you actually want to do more CP - or mediation for that
matter - work.
I've held two 'judgments' of what goes on with respect to this offering.
One is that folks look at the title and have a [incorrect] knee jerk reaction
that this is about 'marketing'. Not at all. Except to the extent that as you
change what you want to do in your practice and how you choose to do it one
would expect that your 'marketing' will change to reflect that.
The other is the [misplaced, in my opinion] obsession with 'training
skills'. Instead of adjusting attitudes. What comes to my mind is that
getting trained to hit a baseball is pretty meaningless if you only play
football. But if you say that you 'want to' play baseball, you damn well
better learn to work out differently, recognize and respond appropriately to
the subtlety of a curve, a change up, etc.
And that's what Woody focuses us on in this work. People who really want
to change sports; not football players who simply want to claim that they're
'trained' to play baseball..... if someone really wants them to.
The curious can check out my interview of Woody as he first launched into
this work which is part of the Learning Opportunities section of our magazine:

You can also catch upcoming opportunities to catch his program there.

Dear List Serv Members,
This is good news.
It wasn’t too long ago there were posts to this group that
sounded like interest in collaborative was dying. Not so. Woody Mosten has a
message that combines self- reflection about our personal values and strengths,
identifying ourselves as peacemakers and how to make money, not in spite of
that but as a result of the energy that unleashes. It’s very relevant and
timely and is breathing life back into the movement. I want to share my
appreciation for this with you as I have with Woody. (For context, I am
president of the Oregon Association of Collaborative Professionals which has
sponsored this training, 68 years old and been practicing law for over 35
years.) This is what I said to Woody:
“I have to say to you, Woody, that you have given me the venue and the message
to complete my life’s work. That has been to find a way to merge my values
with my work in a way that people can digest it without feeling judged or
unworthy. I can’t thank you enough for that. And that’s why it has been time
consuming but really effortless to put this together and have it sell out with
3 weeks to go in the face of overwhelming odds in this community. It’s all
about the inspiration and authenticity of the message you have created. You
are a blessing to the world.”
I have been following the development of Woody’s message for
years and our organization sponsored 3 people to attend this same training in
Seattle last year. It was life-changing for them. It wasn’t easy to sell in
this community but what it took was talking to a cross section of attorneys
about their lives, satisfaction with their work and hopes for their future. It
worked and the platform of having this message to share was enough to breathe
life into this community as well. New practice groups are forming, local basic
collaborative trainings planned, people energized by the message are offering
to serve on our board and even a possible “Collaborative Summit” is in the
works to bring together those of us with experience and the less experienced to
give talks about struggles, successes, tips, etc.
Here’s hoping that other groups are able to hear this message
and that our collective courage is revived.
