All:
We ask the question in our collaborative and mediation cases:
Question-Why did Sleeping Beauty sleep for 100 years?
Answer- Because the bad witch was not invited to the birthing party.
Moral of the Story: Make sure all the WITCHES are at the party.
Shadow advisers…should they be at the table?
How best to handle the case if they are not?
Great topic for discussion.

Sandy,
I have also done this when the person advising is causing trouble.
Sometimes, their inclusion allows them to be heard and addressed so that
they do not need to continue their campaign. The clients, of course, need
to agree and understand the purpose of such a meeting. The client is
present or not, depending. We have done it in disputes involving parenting
rights (coach) and in clarifying the terms of a parental loan ( lawyer). It
is an extension of our message that we are not fighting but helping resolve
without fear.
Best,

For a practice group discussion you can put together a basic outline for a
practice group meeting and let it run its course:
Check-In
How Does a Shadow Advisor Impact a Collaborative Case?
What Are Examples of Different Types of Shadow Advisors?
What Are Strategies for Addressing The Issue of Shadow Advisors in a
Collaborative Case?
Adjourn
If you feel you need a person to facilitate the conversation from outside
your practice group, do so. It can be very helpful.
My approach is to address the Shadow Advisor issue head on, pointing out
how, from my perception, the Shadow Advisor takes my client outside of
themselves. If the influence continues I invite the Shadow Advisor to a
meeting with my client and I.
The fact is that some people choose Shadow Advisors and that makes the
collaborative case more difficult. It is an issue to be addressed in a
collaborative case, however you can do so.

Good morning. If anyone is willing to share ideas or resources for
a practice group meeting program on shadow advisors, please pass them
along. Our group is small and our experiences may not be reflective of the
issues folks are seeing elsewhere. Even if the issues are similar, the
more possible solutions we can add to the toolbox the better off the
process and our clients will be.
