I just had the final hearing on a case last week which began in February.
We were talking frequently with Lynn about doing the case for Dateline. Both
attorneys and the wife were willing, but the husband, my client, decided at
the last minute not to go along with it.
Lynn and I were to the point of discussing the logistics of filming,
and I believe she was making a plane reservation to fly the crew to
Cincinnati when we backed off. These are some of the factors which were
involved in the filming, if my memory is correct:
1. They wanted to shoot the initial consultation with the client, and
I believe all subsequent contacts, not just the four-ways. That is what she
was preparing to come here to do; i.e., shoot my initial consultation.
2. The film crew would not be in the room, and there would be no
cameras in the room, at least as we think of cameras. They have a tiny
camera of some sort which apparently is non-intrusive. The crew would not be
in the room although they would be in the office.
3. NBC would retain all editorial control and select what would be
shown, with no veto by the attorneys or parties.
We didn't try to negotiate any of this because we broke down before we
got to the first shoot. Lynn seems very easy to work with and very excited
about collaborative law, and I expect the final piece would have been
favorable toward collaborative law. I think is just a matter of time before
someone comes up with the right couple, and we will have a big piece of
publicity for the movement.
