Here in Ontario, Canada, as a Social Worker I am a mandated reporter. I do not
believe I can "turn it off". Hence if a client gives me concern that the or she
poses a risk to a child or tells me they have hurt a child, I am obligated to
report. Hence before a client tells me anything, I go over the limits to
confidentiality in clear terms so that they are then responsible for the
information they share. I then have them sign my policy form containing the
paragraph:
Confidentiality: Information will be shared only upon written consent, except
where there is risk of harm to self or another person, or as required by law.
The service record shall remain the property of Interaction Consultants.
Information obtained about persons served will be used for the contracted
service purpose, payment collection and at times, satisfaction surveys.
Non-identifying information may be used for statistical, research or teaching
purposes.
