If anyone remembers me talking about spamassassin, I finally got around
to configuring and using it. I spent a good deal of time learning its
features, but really, it was simple to set up. Here is a snippet of a
piece of mail from my spam folder:

Content analysis details: (16.3 points, 4.2 required)

 pts rule name description
---- ----------------------
--------------------------------------------------
0.9 FROM_ENDS_IN_NUMS From: ends in numbers
2.8 PORN_MEMBERSHIP BODY: Possible Porn - Porn membership
2.6 PAY_SITE BODY: Possible porn - Pay Site
 2.6 FREE_MEMBERSHIP BODY: Free Membership
0.7 COMPLETELY_FREE BODY: No such thing as a free lunch (2)
0.0 HTML_MESSAGE BODY: HTML included in message
 0.5 HTML_20_30 BODY: Message is 20% to 30% HTML
 3.3 MSGID_FROM_MTA_SHORT Message-Id was added by a relay
1.1 FORGED_OUTLOOK_TAGS Outlook can't send HTML in this format
0.0 CLICK_BELOW Asks you to click below
0.2 MIME_BOUND_NEXTPART Spam tool pattern in MIME boundary
1.6 FORGED_MUA_OUTLOOK Forged mail pretending to be from MS Outlook

The original message was not completely plain text, and may be unsafe to
open with some email clients; in particular, it may contain a virus,
or confirm that your address can receive spam. If you wish to view
it, it may be safer to save it to a file and open it with an editor.

Basically what is displayed here is a list of all things that invoke
spam filters in spamassassin in this particular message (there are
thousands of types of filters that spamassassin uses). Each item is
assigned a point value. For example, the rule name "COMPLETELY_FREE" is
assigned .7 points. I have spamassassin configured so that anything that
is over 4.2 points total is considered spam and sent to a folder called
"spam". During my two week test period, one piece of spam slipped
through and got to my inbox. So, I moved the offending message to my
spam mail directory (~/.maildir/spam) and used the following at the
command prompt:

sa-learn --spam ~/.maildir/spam

What this does is allows spamassassin to 'learn'. It is actually
possible to train spamassassin with your spam, AND non-spam. If anybody
is interested, here is theu url:

http://spamassassin.rediris.es/doc.html

You can also use spamassassin with outlook express, as well.
