April 2020
COVID-19 service changes go into effect April 19
RTD’s Board of Directors at its March 24 meeting approved reducing service
40 percent beginning April 19 in reaction to a severe ridership drop amid
COVID-19 lockdowns, running buses every day on a Saturday and Regional
schedule and light rail trains on a Sunday schedule (view final service
changes). RTD will retain current service until that date.
The Board also passed the proposed service changes that had been planned to
take effect in May. Calling the recent 70 percent drop in ridership
“surreal” and unprecedented, RTD directors said they hoped to restore
service to the newly approved May plan whenever the economic impacts of the
coronavirus begin to pass and ridership demand increases.
The reduced service levels are planned to remain in effect through Sept. 20,
the next planned service change. Learn more.
Grocery delivery service now available to RTD Access-a-Ride customers
Home grocery delivery service is available to all of the Regional
Transportation District (RTD)’s Access-a-Ride customers. RTD is offering
this service during the COVID-19 state of emergency to provide current
Access-a-Ride customers with a food delivery option that does not require
leaving home. No fare is required for customers to use this service. Learn

What do people want? To be heard.
When someone dials the main phone number of a big agency like RTD, it’s
natural to wonder: Can they help me? Will they listen? Do they care? Is
anyone going to pick up? Lupe Jones did – for 23 years. Hers was the voice
you may have heard while calling to ask where your bus was, or when the next
one was coming, or how to report a lost wallet. The 41-year RTD employee
recently retired as a supervisor from the agency’s telephone information
center, and she heard it all – at all volumes, accompanied by all emotions,
from every corner of the transit agency’s service district. Meet Lupe.
To Operators, with Love
March 18 was Transit Driver Appreciation Day. While words cannot express our
gratitude for all that operators do to reliably deliver riders to their
destinations every day and night, we thought we’d give it a try. Our Love
Letter.

Gus Schmitter, bus operator out of our Boulder division, is April’s Operator
of the Month. Schmitter acted quickly and decisively to de-escalate a
situation by removing a passenger from the bus who made deeply offensive
remarks to a passenger. Meet Gus.
As the threat of the coronavirus in the United States increases, we want to
remind you how you can protect yourself from COVID-19 when riding RTD
services. While our vehicles are cleaned every day, there are measures you
can take to further protect yourself from getting sick: regularly washing
your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, disinfecting
frequently touched surfaces at work and home, covering your coughs and
sneezes with a tissue, avoiding touching your face, and staying home when
you are sick. Learn more.
In 2018, Americans took nearly 10 billion trips on public transportation.
Transit is an economic catalyst, a safe way to travel and a contributor to a
healthier environment.
