a student will give a short response and open the discussion by asking some
questions. After this, there will be time for your remarks and questions.

On *Tuesday 19 January 2021, dr. David Rijser *(Groningen University/
Amsterdam University), 16.15-18.00, will give a lecture on:
*'The House of Augustus and Populist Politics: New Interpretations of the
Beginnings of the Principate in the Light of Recent Events'*
*Abstract*
Eminent and controversial ancient historian Peter Wiseman in the last
decade has been developing a striking revision of the role of Augustus as a
politician, which causes increasing controversy since his inclusion of the
archaeological interpretation of the Palatine Hill within this discourse.
The lecture reviews the positions and repercussions of this discussion.
*About the speaker*
David Rijser teaches Latin and cultural history at the University of
Amsterdam, and is professor by special appointment at the Rug on a chair of
Classical Receptions. His Antiquity Renewed. How Tiberius landed in New
Jersey will be published by Cambridge University Press in 2021.
