On Thursday, 18 January, 2018, Bärry Hartog’s book *Pesher and Hypomnema: A
Comparison of Two Commentary Traditions from the Hellenistic-Roman Period*
(Brill, 2017) will be presented at the Protestant Theological University in
Groningen. In this book Hartog compares biblical commentaries from the
Qumran Dead Sea Scrolls with Greek commentaries on the Iliad. He concludes
that the writers of the Dead Sea Scrolls participated in broad intellectual
networks, through which they were in contact and exchanged scholarly
knowledge with other intellectuals across the Hellenistic and Roman worlds.
Hartog’s book will be presented by Mladen Popović and Dineke Houtman.
Before this presentation Eibert Tigchelaar will deliver a short lecture, in
which he illustrates the most important developments in recent Qumran
scholarship and the contribution of researchers from Groningen to these
developments.
The book presentation will be followed by a reception.

Dineke Houtman is professor by special appointment of Jewish Studies at the
Protestant Theological University.
Mladen Popović is professor of Old Testament and dean of the Faculty of
Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Groningen.
Eibert Tigchelaar is professor of Old Testament at KU Leuven.
Bärry Hartog is postdoctoral researcher at the Protestant Theological
University.
