I am new to CKF and used to kayak and canoe some 25 years ago. I am retired
now, the kids are in college, and I have been wanting to get back into it. I
would love to get in on your Black Canyon trip or Topock Gorge if that is in
the cards. I have done it about ten times (only 2x in last ten years), usually
the hard way from Willow Beach up and back, and I would love to do it again
either way you guys do it. Could you please keep me informed on the
particulars, how you will be doing it, when, how many people can I bring, etc.
I would love to do it and may try and get in on whatever other trips you do. I
was going to try and do last weekends Arch Rock trip but all three of my girls
just got back from college for winter break. I have plenty of gear and would
probably canoe Black Canyon so I would have room for an ice chest and decent
camp table for a group. My info is below. Feel free to call or email me anytime
for anything you need. I will also send this message to Steve Wilson

Subject: [CKF Info] Multi- Club Paddle Report
Twelve paddlers converged on Newport Beach this morning from diverse SoCal
locales. Fittingly we launched from 3 different launch sites, all coming
together just outside the Corona Del Mar beach. Joining me were Jane, Heidi,
Ian, Duane, Bob, Meri, Blake, Lenora, Howard, Jack, and Victoria, for this
multi-Club paddle. Mark of Utah joined us for lunch making it a baker's dozen
for the day.
When I left home this morning 20 mph winds were predicted for Newport by 9:00
AM. Not much wind to speak of at 9:30 AM when we launched. Sheltered by the
cliffs we had just enough wind out on the open ocean to keep us cool. We
meandered down the coast, some of us playing in the rocks a little. There
wasn’t much of a swell and no sneaker waves showed up, allowing for easy access
in and around the rocks and arches. The water was beautifully clear with
sunshine to spare and just enough of a breeze to make this a perfect day. Some
of us landed at Toxic Beach, our tentative destination for the day, through
terrifying 1 to 1.5-foot surf.
We managed to battle our way back out scarcely getting any water on our spray
deck. Mark met us back at Coast Guard Beach and helped carry multiple boats
across the sand. Most of us debriefed at The Bluffs or Fireside where you have
your choice of many good eateries and great outdoor seating. We discussed
future multi-club paddles. A New Year’s Day paddle will be announced soon. A
Black Canyon Paddle is also in the planning stages!
