This morning, when I arrived at Kiddie Beach, Joe Barrett, his beautiful and
deep throated dog, Ben were visiting with Peter O'Sullivan. Joe was committed
to a belated Fathers Day lunch so would not paddle. Ben could not stay
either. Soon Ed Sun arrived from Orange County. Then Bev Waldron arrived to
do a solo harbor paddle. So it was just Ed, Peter, and I heading to the pond
and points beyond. We headed up the coast, and spotting a Coast Guard boat
sitting to the NW, we headed that way. As we got closer we could see that it
was anchored but not the Blacktip which is home ported in Channel Islands
Harbor. The name on the aft was Terrell Horne. It was 113 ft long and looked
new. A number of crew members waved as they went about their routine.
After resting and watching the Terrell Horne, we paddled toward the Mandalay
Resort, and as we got close to shore, were treated to a show by several
dolphins as they played and jumped. Ed kept making circles, investigating
different things looking for more speed an I was ready to paddle. We watched
an inflatable Coast Guard boat come out of the harbor and meet up with and be
loaded through the aft ramp unto the Terrell Horne.
We joined up with Bev for good conversation over lunch. Ed told us of his
kayak trip around a number of Taiwan islands. One of the other paddlers on
the trip was Maligiaq.
Some research shows The Terrell Horne is a new Coast Guard Cutter that is
named after Terrell Edwin Horne III, a Senior Chief Petty Officer with the
United States Coast Guard, who was killed in the line of duty while
intercepting smugglers, on December 2, 2012 near the Channel Islands. A
