An urban legend:
? appears mysteriously and spreads spontaneously in varying forms
? contains elements of humor or horror (the horror
often "punishes" someone who flouts society's conventions).
? makes good storytelling.
o does NOT have to be false, although most are. URLs often have a
basis in fact, but it's their life after-the-fact (particularly in
reference to the second and third points) that gives them particular
interest."
Hoax: Doesn?t have to be negative, include a virus, be malicious, etc.
It can be true, just be folklore, a story. I like the ones like the
following two:

A day of mourning: With all the sadness and trauma of today's
world, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person
which almost went unnoticed.
Last week. Larry La Prise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey," died
peacefully at age 93.
The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin.
They put his left leg in, and then the trouble started. ---

We were led to believe this to be true in the beginning, but
fortunately it wasn?t AND it was humorous!

THEN?.there are the negative ones that have a lot of potential for
maliciousness. I really dislike the ones that are going around now in
all forms, from all countries about them willing to GIVE you ?x?million
dollars if you?ll put it in YOUR account for them because they don?t
dare in their country for whatever reason?see my attachment. I see
these as utterly ridiculous and find it hard to believe someone can?t
see thru these, but I know when you really NEED money badly, desperate
people do desperate things?.or naively believing everything they read.
I went to www.snopes.com &
http://www.snopes.com/horrors/mayhem/fakecop.htm in their crime and
punishment section?and more. To read up on these. Amazing. I had
figured it?s a way for these unethical people to get your account
numbers, SS#, etc., but it?s much worse than that. Please go to see
what all can happen to a person?even to murder from a ?stupid email?.

OR, I also love the one that comes from a 1988 circulation that people
thought was real?ignorance is NOT bliss?and knowledge can be humorous.
This comes from URL:
http://urbanlegends.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http%3A%2F%
2Fciac.llnl.gov%2Fciac%2FCIACHoaxes.html%23history Go to the HISTORY
OF HOAXES, SUBJ: Really Nasty Virus This link is very long so doesn?t
show a hyperlink in the email?just copy/paste into your browser and
follow there. Thanks. I must say, I?ve gotten a lot of entertainment
from the hoaxes?I just get concerned about viruses accompanying them.
I'm having to send this from my server online and not from home email
program, so because it is all in text only, the links won't show up
active...just copy/paste them into browser. I tested them, they work
that way. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but my computer is giving me
hassles so I'm at lab.
