NOAA Ship Rainier Surveying Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary
October 6, 2017
NOAA Ship Rainier recently arrived off the Santa Barbara and Ventura coast to
complete hydrographic surveys atNOAA's Channel Islands National Marine
Sanctuary. Over the next month the 231-foot ship will deploy multi-beam and
side-scan sonar to support safe navigation and update nautical charts for the
Channel Islands. In addition to providing data for crucial nautical chart
updates, this survey will also generate backscatter data, which will be used
in habitat mapping. Learn more about the surveys on Channel Islands National
Marine Sanctuary and NOAA Coast Survey Facebook pages.
