7 or 8ish humpbacks
1 minke
1 swordfish
common dolphins everywhere
About a half hour out we met our first few common dolphins and soon found
ourselves immersed in them. Rather than the usual pod that comes and goes (or
that we meet and then leave), they seemed to be everywhere, dispersed in the
water all around us for hours.
The humpbacks were in two groups of 3 or 4 around the shipping lanes. Lots of
flukes, no breaches except for one that Captain Joel saw way off in the
distance.
Sunny summery day. Water was a bit choppy for the first few hours and several
passengers got sick. But after passing through the Anacapa Passage, we found
glassy water on the south side of the islands. Absolutely beautiful to view and
comforting to all the queasy stomachs aboard.
We found the Minke and the swordfish in those glassy waters.
Thanks to Captain Joel, Dave, and Sam, as well as fellow CINC naturalist Scott
Cuzzo. Also fun to have photographers David and Lotti aboard. From their fluke
photos, they recognized one of the humpbacks they’d met in the same area on
Thursday. And check out David’s beautiful photo of the swordfish:
