We had a great whale watch Friday morning:
2 adult gray whales mostly snorkeling
2 then 3 mature humpback whales mating then feeding
1quick glimpse if a fin whale
1,000 common dolphins
100s diving birds
Great visibility made it easy to spot the Cetacean. The most exciting part was
the giant bait ball the dolphins created for all the birds, sea lions and
humpbacks to enjoy. The humpbacks broke away from their other activity to come
up through the bait ball, surrounded by dolphins and birds to lunge feed. What
a sight.
Afternoon trip:
3 grays, mating, rolling, fluking
5 humpbacks fluking, diving, lunge feeding
1,000 common dolphins
Seas were calmer making passengers more comfortable in the afternoon. Grays
fluked and displayed mating behavior with flukes and flippers showing up.
Humpbacks in two different locations, feeding and fluking and very close to the
boat on both occasions. Two groups of dolphins making 1,000 or more with lots
of babies in the mix. All species active and exciting to watch.
Thanks to Captain Lee, crew Joe and Leanne for a great day on the water.
Morning trip trainees were, Carol Chase and Stan Kamin from humpback pod, Helen
Mountford from murrelets and Michele Boroski from dolphin pod (unofficially).
Del Hanson in afternoon.
