Thank you very much to Captain Joel, crew Spencer and Laurie (wildlife
interpreter on mic), and fellow naturalist Carol Shoemaker.
A most awesome day (sigh...):
Common Dolphin - 200
Blue Whale - 13
Fin Whale - 4
Minke - 1
Bottlenose Dolphin -20
Small mola mola - 1
And, Drum Roll please..............SPERM WHALE - 1.
Everything was seen in the area north of ESCI, except for the Sperm Whale and
mola mola. These two were seen right after we went between Anacapa and SCI,
into open waters. We saw all the classic Sperm whale activity, multiple quick
bushy blows from the off-center single blowhole as it headed towards us, the
huge squared head, very dark body, wrinkly skin, very small hump for its
dorsal, knuckles going down to the fluke, which was raised high when he did his
nose-down dive. A passenger got a good picture of the dive, showing
dorsal/knuckles/fluke.
First Sperm whale sighting for most of us. Passengers were trying to figure
out how they could prove to folks back home they really did see it.
Privileged to have been there,
Linda Knowlton
