I was at Catalina this past week and took a ride out to the East End by Seal
Rock. Of course there were lots of Sea Lions on the beach and on the rocks,
and a nice pod of perhaps 10 bottlenose dolphins. The bottlenose made a fairly
rapid departure just as 2 modest size Great White Sharks came on the scene.
They were both about 10 feet long and were quite casual about the boat. They
stayed around for about 15 minutes and then disappeared just as mysteriously as
they had arrived. They must have not been hungry because there were plenty of
sea lions around including pups but they paid them no mind. Word in the news
this week is that there are an increasing number of Great White Sharks in
Southern California.
