October 2020 E-Newsletter
October is Water Vision Month
Voice your support for a sustainable water supply for Santa Barbara during
Water Vision Month! The City is developing its water supply and management
plan for the next 30 years and it’s imperative that they hear from the
community as part of this process. Learn more on topics including water
supply planning, our current water sources, and recorded lunch and learn
presentations with question and answer sessions by watching videos on the
City’s website and provide feedback on the City’s Virtual Community Board
(also available in Spanish). Join Channelkeeper in urging the city to
prioritize options like increased conservation and efficiency, stormwater
capture, and recycled water and to only consider desalination as a last
resort after other less expensive and less environmentally harmful options
are fully exhausted.
MPA Watch Volunteer Training Workshop – Thursday, Oct. 22 at 5:30pm
Channelkeeper is looking for dedicated volunteers to help us record and track
human activities in and adjacent to Santa Barbara's Marine Protected Areas
(MPAs) through our MPA Watch program. The data we collect provides important
information to understand how people are using MPAs and also helps inform MPA
management. Becoming an MPA Watch volunteer is easy and fun (and follows
social distancing guidelines)! Our next volunteer training workshop will take
place virtually on Thursday, October 22nd from 5:30-6:30 pm. If you want to
attend please email or call us at 805.563.3377 ext. 4. We will be sending out
the virtual training link closer to the event to everyone who RSVPs.
Santa Barbara City Upholds Stormwater Protections
We are happy to share news of a victory for clean water! On September 23rd,
the Santa Barbara City Council voted to uphold policies that maintain water
quality protections related to development projects. Channelkeeper testified
before City Council to recommend preserving protections that require new
development projects to treat or infiltrate stormwater into the landscape.
These policies were targeted by the real-estate development industry for
weakening. Traditional urban landscapes funnel stormwater straight to the
ocean carrying trash and pollution along the way while wasting our most
precious resource - clean water. Overtime, the water-smart policies will
improve water quality, conserve our water supply, and help preserve flowing
creeks. We're grateful for the support of our environmental partners, the
Environmental Defense Center and Urban Creeks Council, on this issue.
Watershed Brigade September Challenge Recap
A huge THANK YOU to the 14 Watershed Brigade Participants who took on our
September Cleanup Challenge! Together, these folks conducted 10 cleanups of
our beaches, trails, and neighborhoods and removed over 36 bags of trash from
the watershed! Congratulations to Kerri Luttrell, our first raffle prize
winner, who won a 2 hr. Harbor Kayak Tour for two, generously donated by our
good friends at Santa Barbara Adventure Company. While our September
Challenge has wrapped up, the Watershed Brigade is just getting started. Stay
tuned for the announcement of our November Challenge!
The Blue Water Ball – Second Sail
a Successful Virtual Sail!
A huge thank you to all who supported Channelkeeper’s virtual Blue Water Ball
- Second Sail! We are honored to have you on our crew of supporters!
An ocean of gratitude goes out to our special guest and MC of the event,
Geoff Green, our auction donors, event individual and corporate sponsors and
everyone who attended the virtual event or shopped the silent auction for
making this virtual event so successful!
The Blue Water Ball is Channelkeeper's most important fundraiser of the year,
raising critical funds that enable us to monitor the health of our waterways,
advocate for clean water and environmental justice, hold polluters
accountable, and educate and inspire the next generation of environmental
stewards. At this year’s virtual event, Channelkeeper raised over $55,000 to
support our mission to protect and restore the Santa Barbara Channel. Thanks
again to everyone who supported Channelkeeper! Our clean water work would not
be possible without you.
Get Out the Vote!
There's a lot at stake in the 2020 elections, and the results could have
profound impacts on our communities, our health, our water, and our future.
So please VOTE ON NOVEMBER 3rd or before and make sure to prioritize clean
water and the environment this election. Democracy is not for spectators.
Stand up, speak out, and cast your ballot!
