Your support matters.
Catherine,
Our big blue ocean is brimming with sea life, natural resources and
inspiration. It’s remarkable that something so huge can depend on the little
decisions we make every day. But it does!
This is why your help matters. We are excited to be able to share these
updates on the ocean, thanks to your involvement!
On June 20th, the California Fish and Game Commission adopted new guidelines
to better ensure California’s fisheries are achieving the sustainability and
ecosystem goals of the state’s Marine Life Management Act. This is a major
milestone to improve the management of these state fisheries and ensure they
are better prepared for the ongoing effects of a changing climate.
This week we are eagerly awaiting introduction of a bipartisan bill we
created calling for a National Academies of Science study of ocean
acidification (OA) in estuaries, which has been a team effort long in the
making. We expect this bill will give a new group of leaders an opportunity
to voice their support for OA work along our coasts.
In late June, our Trash Free Seas® team hosted a beach cleanup and event
“Celebrating Florida's Beaches” and launched the 2018 International Coastal
Cleanup Report. In partnership with Keep Pinellas Beautiful, volunteers
including the Tampa Bay Lightning, the US Coast Guard, local community
members and non-governmental organization partners cleaned up the popular
Gandy Beach area. Keeping our ocean strong is truly a collaborative effort!
I also need to mention that this month President Trump revoked the National
Ocean Policy executive order and replaced it with his own order, the “Ocean
Policy to Advance the Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the
United States.” This step is dismaying, but it’s a move we have anticipated
since the beginning of the Trump administration. Some of the key components
of the original order have been retained, meaning we will still be able to
work with regions and states on their ocean plans.
Your day-to-day support fuels our advocacy work, legislative initiatives,
on-the-ground research, cleanup efforts and more. Thank you!
Keep up the incredible work!
I look forward to sharing more updates in the days and months to come.
