REMEMBERING THE CONCEPTION 34
Conception at Santa Cruz Island
Today we remember the Conception 34. Two years ago the world learned of the
tragedy aboard the 75-foot commercial dive boat, Conception, at Platts
Harbor, Santa Cruz Island. On September 2, 2019 when the vessel burned and
sank at anchor, 34 people died in the greatest maritime tragedy ever to occur
at any of our Channel Islands. Although results of the year-long
investigation come to no conclusive cause of the fire, it is believed by many
that lithium-ion batteries are to blame.
To memorialize the 34 lives lost at Santa Cruz Island on September 2, 1919, a
large granite monument surmounted by a 4-bladed bronze Conception propeller
is under fabrication. It will be placed in the courtyard garden of the
Chrisman California Islands Center under development in Carpinteria,
California. Please contact us for information about
