** Island Foxes In 2022
------------------------------------------------------------
What a difference a little December rain can make! While rainfall levels
remain below normal, there is hope that drought conditions will lessen and
island foxes will thrive in 2022.

Looking from Santa Rosa Island to San Miguel Island, you can really get an
idea of how limited the habitat is for island foxes. Thank you to Channel
Islands National Park biologist Juliann Schammel for sharing this recent
photo.

Holly Gamblin - San Clemente Island foxes are the subspecies most frequently
seen in mainland zoos. Rarely, however, do we get to hear about these island
foxes in the wild. The San Clemente Island fox is a conservation focus for
the U.S. Navy and has been monitored almost continuously since 1988. The
Institute for Wildlife Studies monitors island foxes for the U.S. Navy and
IWS biologist, Holly Gambin, will share an update on the status of this
population and the reasons for their stability and growth.

Ellie Bolas - Island spotted skunks on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands have
been dramatically impacted by island fox decline and recovery. Ellie Bolas
will share insights from her research on the ecology of island spotted skunks
and how they share habitat with island foxes. She'll also talk about current
understanding of how and when spotted skunks colonized the Channel Islands.

Join us for a "Date with a Fox" on February 12.

Healthy island foxes are reported across the Channel Islands and winter rains
are renewing resources. Biologists in the field, however, are noting a
dramatic increase in ticks.
