Catherine,
At first glance, coral reefs might look like they’re made up of colorful
rocks. But peer a little closer and you’ll see that those “rocks” are
actually covered with many tiny, swaying organisms: coral polyps.
Coral polyps are soft-bodied critters that come together to form coral
colonies. They have a mutually beneficial relationship with an algae that
gives them the vibrant colors they’re famous for.
These invertebrates may not have backbones, but they are the backbone of
coral reef ecosystems. Hard corals—or corals that form a calcium carbonate
skeleton—are the building blocks of coral reefs. In turn, coral reefs are
home to 25% of all marine life.
You don’t have to be a coral reef trivia master to know these animals are an
important part of a healthy, thriving ocean. Now, you can enjoy a reef of
your own with our new coral reef wallpaper. 💯
There’s a reason why people worldwide flock to see coral reefs—they’re home
