Right on Marty!
In 2009 when I was coaching American football in Sicily I was a neophyte member
of the CINC on excused furlough. I coached for a team named the ELEPHANTS in
Catania , right at the base of The VOLCANO ETNA. I thought the team, all local
Young Sicilians, picked their name because of the history behind elephants in
ancient wars involving Hannibal and the Greeks before him. BUT NO, THE
RELATIVELY NEW TEAM WAS NAMED AFTER THE MANY FOSSILS THAT WERE FOUND AROUND
THE BASE OF MT ETNA!
The fascination with the fossils went beyond realization that they proved
mammoths and/or elephants lived on The Island of Sicily. It also lent to an
explanation of who the BLINDED ONE EYED CYCOPS WAS WHO WILDLY THREW HOT ROCKS
AT THE ESCAPING ULYSIS AND HIS CREW!
Currently in the news, THAT BLINDED ONE EYED CYCLOPS IS AT IT AGAIN, from his
hideaway on MT ETNA! He must be immortal, as he still thinks Ulysses is ?
Cheers, Paul
P.S. The ancient Greeks who first found those various mammoth fossils deduced
that the big hole in the skull was for one big eye, not a huge trunk? Plus, Mt
ETNA was throwing hot rocks around during the Journey’s of Ulysses just as it
is now.
