Ahoy Collegues,
Wow, what an outstanding day on the Condor Express yesterday! 12 Humpbacks for
sure + 2,000 Common Dolphin! Very calm seas, sun, and clear waters!
Captain Dave and 1st Mate Tasha, found the whales first within 6 miles from
Santa Barbara. All the sightings, plus additional distant blows, plus a breach
where the whales fluke cleared the surface, were all this side of the shipping
lanes directly south of SB.
Folks aboard included Australians, Brits, Germans, and Dutch, as well a three
other states besides Calif. They, as well as yours truly, Tara Brown, and PID
Carolyn McCleskey, were totally awed almost continuously by repeated feeding
frenzies on anchovies where-in the Humpbacks were lunge feeding amid sea birds
and dolphin galore. Tara, Carolyn, and myself were in total agreement about
neither of us ever having seen so many lunge feeding events in one whole
season, let alone in one day! One Mom and her not too big calf were the main
actors in the lunge feeding. It appeared the calf was being tutored?
I will try to post a photo or two after signing off here. We will see how this
new list works with that effort? Cheers, Paul
