Students Recover from Fire Posted: August 26, 2004 Though the walls are still standing, the belongings inside are covered with soot and ash. Just after three Wednesday afternoon, fire erupted on 3rd street in Charleston. Five Eastern Illinois University students lived in the home. The men lost almost everything in the fire. The students say though their belongings are gone, they still have good friends, a supportive community and most importantly each other. Multiple fire dispatches were called to the scene around 3:15 yesterday afternoon. Smoke could be seen for miles. Kevin Atkins, who's lived in the house for three years was taking a nap in his room only 10 minutes before the fire started. The fire destroyed most of Atkins belonging including his truck. But the young men say it's not the stuff they'll miss the most, it's the place where they lived and socialized day to day a place they called home. They say the help they've received is tremendous. Thanks to one of their good friends and teammates, they now have a place to stay. The track and cross country men are moving on and not looking back sticking together as a team. The men say they believe the fire began in the back of the house. News Watch was unable to reach the Charleston Fire Department for an official cause. Owner of the home, Wesley Ballsrud says he's not sure what he'll do with the home. Ballsrud 's owned the home for seven years. Sean A.
