Board of Directors Meet in Vail, Colorado -- Board Meeting Summary Report Audubon's Board of Directors held its third annual Board Retreat May 18th through 21st in Vail, Colorado. The annual retreat is an opportunity for National Board members, State Board leaders, local Audubon leaders, State Executive Directors and Home Office staff to work together to refine and share ideas. The theme of this year's retreat was "Putting it all together: Combining Science, Education and Advocacy at the local, state national and international levels to achieve greater conservation results." Almost 140 leaders and staff attended the retreat. The retreat included topical sessions on Audubon's Mississippi River conservation initiative; our international work on IBAs, particularly in the Western Hemisphere; and exploration of Audubon engagement in the Global Warming issue. The goal of these sessions was to develop key recommendations for Audubon to consider not only in connection with these particular emerging projects, but also throughout the organization. The main objective, using these examples, was to develop a shared sense among the participants of the energy and success Audubon has when its grass roots, Board leaders and professional staff work together to achieve results. The detailed summaries of those sessions are being prepared and will be shared with participants and state offices. State Board Working Sessions During the course of the weekend there were also working sessions for State Board leaders who addressed the following topics: * Strategic Planning This session looked especially at strategically building on Audubon's strengths to achieve our conservation goals. * Board Development and Fundraising Two sessions were offered by Marc Smiley, an Organizational Development consultant from Oregon. The first covered how to recruit for and structure an engaged board and the second covered the basics of a board's responsibility in fundraising.
