Board of Directors Meet in Vail, Colorado -- Board Meeting Summary Report
Audubon's Board of Directors held its third annual Board Retreat May 18th
through 21st in Vail, Colorado. The annual retreat is an opportunity for
National Board members, State Board leaders, local Audubon leaders, State
Executive Directors and Home Office staff to work together to refine and share
ideas. The theme of this year's retreat was "Putting it all together: Combining
Science, Education and Advocacy at the local, state national and international
levels to achieve greater conservation results." Almost 140 leaders and staff
attended the retreat.
The retreat included topical sessions on Audubon's Mississippi River
conservation initiative; our international work on IBAs, particularly in the
Western Hemisphere; and exploration of Audubon engagement in the Global Warming
issue. The goal of these sessions was to develop key recommendations for
Audubon to consider not only in connection with these particular emerging
projects, but also throughout the organization. The main objective, using these
examples, was to develop a shared sense among the participants of the energy
and success Audubon has when its grass roots, Board leaders and professional
staff work together to achieve results. The detailed summaries of those
sessions are being prepared and will be shared with participants and state
offices.
State Board Working Sessions
During the course of the weekend there were also working sessions for State
Board leaders who addressed the following topics:
*       Strategic Planning
This session looked especially at strategically building on Audubon's strengths
to achieve our conservation goals.
*       Board Development and Fundraising
Two sessions were offered by Marc Smiley, an Organizational Development
consultant from Oregon. The first covered how to recruit for and structure an
engaged board and the second covered the basics of a board's responsibility in
fundraising.
National Board Actions
The Centers Review Task Force (CRTF), chaired by Sarah Muyskens, met by phone
in advance of the board meeting and discussed four exciting new projects. Three
were new center projects. The fourth was a recommended renovation at an
existing center. The Planning and Finance Committee and the Conservation
Committee were briefed during the meeting and the following actions were
recommended for moving forward:
*       Approved Audubon's FY 2007 budget.
* Approved the business plan for Grange Insurance Audubon Center in
Columbus, Ohio
* Approved the business plan for the Little Rock Audubon Center, in
Little Rock, Arkansas
* Approved a framework for Audubon to engage on Global Warming
* Approved of the following four real estate transactions:
* Acceptance of ownership of 6,800 acre Bobcat Ranch in Yolo County,
California, subject to a conservation easement to be held by the California
Department of Game and Fish
* Acceptance of the devise of Nan Owen's property in San Diego County,
California, as a tradeland to be sold and the proceeds give to Audubon's Alaska
program, as instructed by Ms. Owen, a lifelong Audubon member, in her trust.
* Acceptance of a conservation easement on up to 10 acres of land
connecting Audubon-owned land at the Sharon Audubon Center.
* Approval for Audubon to purchase 168.74 acres of property adjacent to
the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center near Denton, Nebraska.
* Election of Alan Wilson as Secretary of the Board
* Election of Craig Lee as Vice President of International Alliances
Special Awards and Recognition
Audubon's Callison Award for outstanding achievement in conservation recognized
three individuals who have significantly advanced the Audubon mission in the
field. Benjamin Olewine IV, who has provided tremendous leadership and support
for Audubon as a member, as a board leader at the National level and also in
several states, and as a significant and dedicated donor; Dave Miller,
Executive Director of Audubon New York; and Tom Baptist, Executive Director of
Audubon Connecticut. In addition, Paul Tebbel, former director of Audubon's
Rowe Sanctuary and Iain Nicolson Audubon Center, received special recognition
for his 11 years of leadership at Rowe.
