FEBRUARY 2021 NEWSLETTER
“Earthrise”
By Amanda Gorman
Where despite disparities
We all care to protect this world,
This riddled blue marble, this little true marvel
To muster the verve and the nerve
To see how we can serve
Our planet. You don’t need to be a politician
To make it your mission to conserve, to protect,
To preserve that one and only home
That is ours,
To use your unique power
To give next generations the planet they deserve.
We are demonstrating, creating, advocating
We heed this inconvenient truth, because we need to be anything but lenient
With the future of our youth.
And while this is a training,
in sustaining the future of our planet,
There is no rehearsal. The time is
Now
Now
Now,
Because the reversal of harm,
And protection of a future so universal
Should be anything but controversial.
So, earth, pale blue dot
We will fail you not.

(the Earth Charter) was launched last month at the One Planet summit in Paris.
As The Guardian reports, “Prince Charles is urging businesses to invest in the
health of the planet and people at the launch of a sustainable finance charter
backed by several international institutions. Evoking the history of Magna
Carta, the Prince of Wales is launching the Terra Carta – the Earth charter –
that will ask signatories to agree to almost 100 actions to become more
sustainable by 2030. In the Terra Carta’s statement of intent, the voluntary
commitments include supporting international agreements on the climate,
biodiversity and desertification, backing efforts to protect half of the planet
by 2050, and make investment and financial flows consistent with a future of
low greenhouse gas emissions.” Read the full article

A recent article in the National Catholic Reporter's EarthBeat shares this
hopeful news: Davi Kopenawa, a Yanomami leader and shaman, has become the first ;
Indigenous leader elected to the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. Kopenawa has
been recognized internationally for denouncing the massacres of his people and
environmental destruction by wildcat gold miners who have invaded the Yanomami
territory at the border between Brazil and Venezuela. In December 2019,
Kopenawa won the Right Livelihood Award for his efforts. Kopenawa points out
that as climate change grows more intense, “the whole world is looking to the
Amazon. Future generations need the forest.” Read the full article

Religion & Ecology Early-Career Scholars (REECS) is a new international and
interdisciplinary reading group that aims to create a network of connection and
support for early-career scholars (loosely defined as those working on their
dissertations to pre-tenured faculty) working in the field of religion and
ecology (broadly defined). Meetings will take place on Zoom and any interested
early-career scholar in religion and ecology is invited to join. This reading
group is a chance to drive conversations in the field forward, to turn the
theory and method of religion and ecology towards otherwise understudied areas
and to connect religion and ecology with new developments in related fields in
environmental studies. REECS hopes to maximize on the diversity of voices in
its ranks. More information about the scope, goals, and structure of the
reading group is about on the Forum

Powell<mailto:russell.powell@xxxxxx> and/or Timothy

As part of its mission to empower faith-based organizations, UNEP's Faith for
Earth Initiative has engaged prominent Muslim environmental scholars and
institutions to positively impact the environmental attitudes of 1.8 billion
Muslims worldwide. This call to action, officially titled Al-Mizan: A Covenant
for the

will be produced by the partnership of two teams. The Scholars Drafting Team,
featuring renowned Islamic scholars from every continent, will confer sacred
scripture in the Quran, the practices of Prophet Mohammad, and the teachings of
Islam around six chapters comprising the final document. The Core Team, chaired
by Faith for Earth and composed of representatives from Islamic organizations,
will provide administrative support to the Scholars Drafting Team and will
facilitate the institutional aspects of Al-Mizan. On February 8th, the Core
Team will solicit feedback from 200+ focal points representing institutions
around the world to participate in a consultative review of the first draft of
Al-Mizan. Islamic organizations are encouraged to participate in this
consultative process by nominating a focal point to coordinate this effort. For

The Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology informs and inspires people to preserve,
protect, and restore the Earth community. The religions of the world transmit
ecological and justice perspectives in their scriptures, rituals, and
contemplative practices as well as in their moral and ethical commitments. We
seek to identify those perspectives in the service of finding collaborative
solutions to our global environmental crises. Learn more about our mission and
vision.<https://yale.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da421acac235473df472e31a&id=f2b373f99f&e=c37c165227>
