You may want to back up what's
there first... Laptops seem to have
special drivers pretty often and
there's no easy way to be sure until
the standard ones fail.

I'd go mad with win95 on less than
a 486dx2 (which is 50 to 66mhz) with at
least 16meg RAM.
For laptops I mostly use DOS. I
like to be able to read and write without
waiting more than 30 seconds, and nothing
else offers that. (not even linux :( )
