The only thing I disagree with Kim on is the list of "needs" before going outside the group. I think dwelling on the details of architecture or specifications would be a mistake. Those things are important, but not as much as the message. The greatest asset this group has is your collective experience with _using_ CAD to design and build things that make life better. If you can distill that experience into a message and vision, you can spread it and get it acted upon, I guarantee. You (the designers of the world) are the ones creating the medical devices, homes, bridges, and internets that make life better for us all. Tell people that. Also tell them how and when CAD gets in the way of doing that, and how it can be made better. OpenSource is as much about passion as anything else. -----Original Message----- From: Kim Lux [mailto:lux@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Friday, January 17, 2003 8:48 AM To: cad-linux@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [cad-linux] Re: 2D versus 3D thoughts: list of candidates "the difference is that now we can be seen as a group instead of scattered individuals around the world." Exactly ! If we don't have a critical mass, I'm sure we could gather one/ will gather one when we go public ie on desktoplinux, slashdot, newsforge, etc. The big thing we have to do before going outside the group is to nail the architecture, product spec, vision, etc. Once this stuff is decided and put in stone, the project will stay on track. The vision has to have buy in and that will come about if we build a product that people want to use ie we get the spec right. The reason all these other CAD projects started over the years is because the product offering didn't fit what someone needed and they decided they could build something better/ something that would fit their needs.
