ok, so, after endless time wasters I got to installing linux. yeah, it is probably my fault for not having a linux box up and running allready, but I have largely been sort of lacking in any ok sized hd's (much above a gew hundred MB) until recently, and I was unsure how much a recent linux distro would take. now, with a linux box, I can run linux sw (or what stuff I can't get to work on windows). now, maybe I can also keep the linux ports of my stuff up to date (haven't really been doing that, so in all likelyness it wouldn't build without having to set up makefiles...). ok, a distro I use a lot is slackware, but I have reasons for not wanting to install it. it is quite good for utility stuff, but any prebuilt packages are problematic, and some software doesn't come with source or support slackware (and thus tends not to work). I also have a slightly older version of mandrake around, but wanted something fairly new. mandrake 8.0 is a little aging now. so, I decided to rely on distros my dad has, at least he keeps them up to date pretty well... first I tried mandrake 10: first dvd, a burned dvd, the wrong damn thing, it was a mislabeled disk; second, again a burned dvd, this time it was one with disk io errors, and apparently there was crap on the disk during burning which led to there being a lot of visible "holes" and such in the burning. ok, so then I was like, ok, I will try lindows, my dad likes it. that was terribly frusterating, in fact, one of the most frustrating distros I have tried messing with. no gcc, not even on the cd (or a custom install for me to notice the absence of gcc). no, they want me to use "click'n'run", or essentially I would have to download it, and apparently their download service/install system is trialware, afterwards, one can no longer apparently install stuff (excluding maybe from tarballed source, but hell, one needs the dev tools and libs for that...). otherwise, it was just generally frusterating... lindows has earned some scorn from me. even if not a show stopped, on general principle it has annoyed me. my dad was flogging off fedora some, but couldn't find the cd. now I am installing redhat 9. good enough, at least I know what to expect from redhat. at least I could select packages, and see that the crap I wanted was getting installed. yes, redhat is working ok. apart from "nautilus" acting up (with the net effect that I would almost end up having to use smbclient or smbmount otherwise), all is going ok thus far. it seems to be building thus far without any problems. I am just hoping it all works, preferably before my stomache totally burns up (allready getting pain, not a good sign...). if I like it I may go about trying to port to windows, but I am not sure, I would probably have to get involved with the main developers or such. also, I could just wait for them to get a good windows port... build ok. seems to be working, cool... oh well, this group is cad-linux-dev, and not necissarily cad-linux-install...
