Hi All, and especially Tim and Julian
Firstly, I appreciate the effort that is put in to maintaining the boat, and
hope my email didn’t come across as a criticism in any way, as that certainly
wasn’t how it was intended.
I understand the issues are down to the boat age and some less than ideal
design issues, and to answer Julian’s question, it didn’t (in the end) spoil
the day.
I was really just trying to identify that whilst we have a number of
experienced boat handlers, and new ones coming on line, if they are not
comfortable taking the boat out due to it’s quirks, that potentially limits the
number of dives we do, and I think the focus should be on getting a suitable
replacement sooner than later, even if that means curtailing our aspirations
slightly and going for nearly new, rather than holding out for potential
funding that may put as back a year or more.
Anyway, we still have spaces for next week, so anyone interested in, probably
Thursday or Saturday, (or Friday if we get inundated) please let me know
Bryan

Subject: [budc] Re: The boat
Dear All.
Our boat is over 14 years old now and is bound to be suffering from the effects
of age and salt water. We see this now with the various wiring faults that are
starting to appear etc. For those old enough to remember this is exactly what
started to happen with the old boat to everyone's annoyance and the reason it
was replaced.
However this has been identified and the replacement of the current boat is
being considered.
There are many things that can be dealt with on the boat but sadly easing the
throttles is not one of them. Julian and I have researched the problem and
spent many hours improving them significantly and they are now at the pinnacle
of their performance for the age they are, far better than they were. The issue
is the very poor design and accessibility of the linkage that runs in the
engine compartment.
The problems encountered recently will be due to the interlock that stops the
engine turning over in anything else than neutral, disabling the interlock is
too dangerous. If it was your own boat it would not be an issue as you would be
used to it, however on a shared boat it is something to get used to, which is
the issue. New boats have fly by wire controls - lovely.
Regards

I know there is a some discussion about a replacement boat (isn’t there
always), and talk of applying for a grant to boost our funds.
At different times we had problems starting both engines yesterday, and whilst
when they are running they are fine, there is obviously a concern about
reliability (neither starting problem was related to the starter motors fixed
by Tim, which were working fine).
We think one of the problems yesterday may have to do with the throttles not
finding neutral, and I know this has been an ongoing issue, but they are
definitely getting worse.
If we got for a grant, I’m assuming we are looking at being at least a year
away from replacing the boat, and I’m concerned (and I’m not the only one)
about having confidence we can rely on the boat for that long without spending
serious money.
I believe the option of looking at a nearly new boat, within our current budget
may have been mentioned, and I think this is something that should seriously be
looked at.
We’ve had a few great dives off the boat recently, and it has really shown it’s
worth, so it would be a shame to miss out on those dives because nobody is
comfortable taking the boat out next year
