SS THISTLEGORM - THE WRECK THAT KEEPS GIVING
Thursday 11th February 8pm
SS Thistlegorm is widely regarded as one of the "top ten" wreck dives in the
world. It's accessibility to recreational scuba divers (the keel lies at
30m) making it a standard inclusion in Red Sea "Northern Wrecks and Reefs"
itineraries. Or for those who like early starts(!) it can be dived on a
(long) day trip from Sharm el Sheikh or Hurghada.
Join us as we hear from Simon Brown of Deep 3D, one of the international
team of archaeologists, divers and digital technicians working on The
Thistlegorm Project. This is an ongoing underwater archaeological survey
recording the remains of the SS Thistlegorm in the Red Sea using cutting
edge digital techniques to raise awareness of the wreck and to help ensure
its preservation for future generations. Simon's talk for us will be based
on the session he presented to the Nautical Archaeology Society's conference
in November 2020.
Simon's presentation will cover SS Thistlegorm's history (archive records),
how they mapped it using photogrammetry in 3D, how they used the 3D outputs
to identify previously unknown parts of the ship and cargo things.plus some
of Alex Mustard's images to accompany.
Digital 2D mapping reveals the wreck in incredible detail - 2mm per pixel
across the whole site - which can be measured with confidence. This site map

Since the survey was conducted in 2017 further work has been conducted using
more powerful computers which, amongst other things, has located more
remains of the locomotives and proved the identity of the parts thanks to
some very knowledgeable folk at the Stanier 8F Society. The 2018 Apple iBook
has also been followed up in 2020 by a hardback, paperback and Kindle
