Hello sailors, hope you survived the heat wave this weekend!
Duane, Sol and I took the threat of Real Feel 105 degrees seriously and made
an escape north to Kingston, Ontario over the weekend, to get a chance to
check out a Shark. Shark 24s are the boat of choice for the upcoming Blind
Fleet Racing Worlds in September, at the same location. Duane, Barbara, Sol
and Denis are planning to compete. While it looks a bit like your
grandfather's plodding daysailer, the Shark surprised us with a bit of get up
and go. It slips sideways like nobody's business upwind, but it sure can take
some breeze. We had excellent weather in the high teens for wind, and clear
skies. It's a fun little boat, and more ergonomic than it at first appeared.
We just might be able to fit a whole blind team on board!
Anyway, all that aside, let's hear who's in for practice this week! If you'd
like to do Advanced Racing on Tuesday, I think we can scrounge up at least
two guides. Last week was tricky and shifty, but Pauline and Duane both hung
with the fleet and got some good tips from top sailors afterwards. And
speaking of top sailors, it was great to see former guide Ken Legler back out
on the water for his first race of the summer (not that he appears to have
much rust on him, if you look at the scores)!
Thursday Open Practice will be at CBI as usual. Last week's focus was on
steering. We did some follow the leader drills (Richard enjoyed being tricky)
and got Christina Luca hiking on the rail with the tiller extension! Go Chris!
If there's anything specific you'd like to do at practice, let the coaches
know. Please RSVP by Wednesday if you are coming!
Have a great week,
Grace
