BIRD STUDY GROUP
I went birding at the airport this morning to see if I could find Western
Kingbirds where they had nested the two previous years. I discovered the birds
in 2012 in mid-June and found them nesting in the same place last year in
mid-June. So, I may be pushing the envelop in terms of checking now.

So, what to do? Just post that I went looking for nesting Western Kingbirds and
did not find any or post the ebird list I generated? Seems to me that the
entire list paints a picture of what is present at the airport - located at the
former England Air Force Base. I'm sure I could have picked up Carolina Wren
and Northern Cardinal if I had worked the limited amount of riparian habitat,
mostly around the golf course ponds but really didn't have time.

What's expected? Well, frankly, I've only birded the place a few times in June.
I can speculate as to what I'd expect in that sort of habitat but until I
generate a seasonal checklist by going regularly, I can't really do anything
more than speculate what will be found.

And, that's the point of ebird - to bird hither, thither and yon, with yon
including places few people will bird. Well, I stumbled on the nesting Western
Kingbirds simply because I had to kill time while waiting for a meeting at the
planning commission office located at the base immediately adjacent to the
nesting site!

Best,

Jay Huner
