A new breeding location for the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was found today, 29 May, on Iron Mountain in Smyth County, Va by Ron Harrington and Wallace Coffey. A male was found on territory at 4,480 feet. The site is along Forest Service Route 84 at Cherry Tree Camp, 3 miles east Skulls Gap where Va. Rt. 600 crosses Iron Mountain. The bird was heard drumming about 100 yards north of Cherry Tree Camp along a trail just beneath Double Top knoll. Using a tape recording of the sapsucker's drumming and vocal call taken from the "Birds In Forested Landscapes" recording by Cornell, the bird was called into close range where it was easily observed. Cecil Thomas, wildlife biologist with the Jefferson National Forest NRA office in Marion, said this is a new location for the species. Birds have been found during the breeding season in the Little Laurel Creek watershed south of Skulls Gap. Let's go birding.....
