Lois called the meeting to order and turned it over to Mary Jane to introduce
our speaker, Kevin Blaylock. Kevin is a graduate of King College, a member of
the Bristol Bird Club, a local business owner, president of the Bristol Host
Lions Club, and a board member of the Phoenix Landing Foundation. He gave a
very interesting talk on “Birds of the Brazilian Pantanal”. He included slides
of his recent trip to Brazil with the Phoenix Landing Foundation. That group
is very active in the preservation of bird habitat in Brazil. Kevin had his
macaw, Echo, with him to help with the program. The organization also helps
find new homes of parrots when it becomes necessary for their owners to give
them up. Many of these birds live a long life and can outlive their family.

The business meeting followed the program.

Faye read the minutes of the August meeting and they were accepted as read.
Judy provided a treasurer’s report on the screen and had some print copies for
those who wanted one. She reported a bank balance of $2745.33 with $701.00 of
that designated funds for the Lee R. Herndon Fund and the Paddle Creek Fund in
memory of Carolyn Coffey. Her report was accepted for file.

The program for the public at the Bristol Public Library will be Sunday,
October 20, 2013, at 2:00 P.M. Tom Hunter will present a program on Backyard
Birds, John Hay will discuss how to make your yard bird friendly. Other
members will show various bird feeders, birding guides, and help answer
questions. Everyone is encouraged to come help with this project.

Several of our members helped and/or attended the Wildlife Weekend at Steele
Creek Park. Ron Harrington set up a beautiful display and offered a prize of
a blue bird nest box made by his cousin for a drawing from among those
participants who completed a word search. Jeanie and Barney Brehl hosted the
display area for the club. John Moyle led a bird walk that morning which ended
up at a banding station where Rack Cross, Richard Lewis, and Michelle Sparks
worked.

Lois asked for a volunteer to host our annual Christmas party in December.
Anyone willing to do so should contact her as early as possible.

Under interesting sightings, Rick Knight reported seeing a Wilson Warbler on
the Elizabethton Linear Path today and five different species of gulls at
Musick’s Campground on Oct. 14, including a Franklin’s Gull found by Brookie
and Jean Potter.

The meeting was closed with time for fellowship after.
