Boone Lake & South Holston Lake (detailed separately below)
mainly Sullivan Co., TN
The winter storm that moved northeastward through Tenn late yesterday
and into today caused a major fallout of loons & ducks.
Boone Lake
Com. Loon - 1,050 + - a new high count in the state (but see below)
ducks - 1,200 of 16 species - that's a lot of ducks for Northeast Tenn.,
including:
Canvasback - 10
Redhead - 375
Lsr Scaup - 360
Surf Scoter - 4
Red-br. Merganser - 20
Ruddy Duck - 170
also:
Com. Tern - 1 - new late date in state
Tree Swallow - 1
South Holston Lake
Com. Loon - 1,025 +
Better still, late yesterday afternoon, Ron Carrico witnessed the actual fallout
of these loons. He counted 2,000 on the water, plus 2-3 thousand more flying
past during an hour. So, approximately 4-5 thousand total, some of which
lingered
into today. That number boggles the mind & blows away the previous high count
in the state.
also some ducks were present, but not many & nothing unusual.
