Unicoi Co., TN

1.5 miles SE of Unicoi,

Cherokee National Forest,

Saturday, 3 May 2014

During the Elizabethton chapter's annual five-county spring count, held this

past Saturday, a birding party working in the vicinity of Irishman Branch

just off TN Rt. 107 about 1.5 miles SE of its intersection at the community

of Unicoi, heard and saw a Northern Saw-whet Owl.

The bird was at an elevation of 2640 feet.

That prompted Dr. Fred Alsop to term it the lowest elevation for a

Saw-whet owl during the breeding season in this region.

The observers included: Joe McGuiness, Kim Stroud, Don Holt and

Kathy Noblet.

According to Kim Stroud, who related the observation details to birders

at Tuesday's May meeting of the Elizabethton club, the bird was

heard calling. Then it flew out and about the field party. Joe McGuiness

played an I-pod recording and the bird called again.

Alsop said their studies of the species at East Tennessee State University

This springhas produced at least one active nest.

He said birds were being found this breeding season at new localities

which include Pond Mountain and Rocky Fork.
