Last Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, the Elizabethton (Herndon) Chapter of TOS held a field trip to western Washington County, TN. Participants were Dianne Draper, Jacki Hinshaw, Don Holt, Reece Jamerson, Rick Knight, Joe McGuiness, Mike Poe, Brookie & Jean Potter, and Gary Wallace. The ten club members met in chilly temperatures (26 degrees F) at 8 am in Jonesborough and carpooled to various hotspots in the area, including Bush Hog Pond, the exotic animal farm, Keebler Road, and Stockton Road. Several target species were found, including Loggerhead Shrike, Red-headed Woodpecker, Peregrine Falcon, Ostrich, and Yak. Big misses were Lapland Longspur, Eurasian Collared Dove, and Giraffe. A bonus for those who stayed the latest was an albino Red-tailed Hawk on Snapp Bridge Road who posed graciously for a close-up driveby. A tentative total for the day was 46 native or naturalized bird species observed: Great Blue Heron Canada Goose Mallard Peregrine Falcon Northern Harrier Cooper's Hawk Sharp-shinned Hawk Red-tailed Hawk American Kestrel Black Vulture Turkey Vulture Kildeer Common Snipe Mourning Dove Rock Pigeon Belted Kingfisher Northern Flicker Yellow-bellied Sapsucker Downy Woodpecker Hairy Woodpecker Pileated Woodpecker Red-bellied Woodpecker Red-headed Woodpecker Horned Lark American Crow Blue Jay Carolina Chickadee Eastern Tufted Titmouse White-breasted Nuthatch Carolina Wren Ruby-crowned Kinglet Eastern Bluebird American Robin Northern Mockingbird Loggerhead Shrike European Starling Yellow-rumped Warbler Northern Cardinal Savannah Sparrow Song Sparrow Swamp Sparrow White-crowned Sparrow Eastern Meadowlark House Finch American Goldfinch House Sparrow submitted by Don Holt Johnson City, TN ************************************************* BRISTOL BIRDS NET LIST Bristol Birds Net Photo Gallery located at: http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/jwcoffeyy/album?.dir=/efd5 This is a regional birding list sponsored by the Bristol Bird Club to facilitate communications between birders and bird clubs of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee. -------------------------------------------------- You are subscribed to Bristol-Birds.
