The Holston Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists is offering their Basic Training Class starting on February 17, 2011 and running through May 5 in Room 240 at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon. Classroom instruction will run from 6:30 to 9:30pm on Thursdays. Excellent instructors will cover such diverse subjects as basic geology, karst groundwater hydrology, aquatic biology, ornithology, salamanders, entomology, forestry, stream health, and more. There will also be 12 Saturday field trips. In May, students can choose to participate in the Mt. Rogers Naturalist Rally for their advanced training. A cost of $100 includes nearly $100. worth of books and resources, class tuition, field trips, registration fee for the Mt. Rogers Master Naturalist Rally and the chapter dues of $25. for the 2011 calendar year. Space is limited, enroll now if interested. The Virginia Master Naturalist Program is a statewide corps of volunteers providing education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities. Interested Virginians become Master Naturalists through training and volunteer service. To become certified, Master Naturalists are expected to complete 40 hours of basic training, including classroom hours and field trips, 8 hours advanced training and 40 hours of volunteer service in the 12 months following their class.
