This morning, Gil Derouen and I birded water areas in Sullivan County,.
Our main objective was to see if the Tundra Swan reported by Rick Knight
on Christmas Day was still around--it was.
Summary:
Paddle Creek--we thought it might be iced over, but there was lots of
open water, and many ducks--also many new decoys!
Gadwall 8
N. Pintail 6
Greem-winged Teal 6
Ring-necked Duck 20
Red-breasted Merganser 8
Am. Kestrel 1
Riverside/Big Springs Rds.
N. Pintail 2
Bufflehead 6
Red-headed Woodpecker 2---1 adult, 1 immature
River View Drive
Tundra Swan--The swan was visible as we approached the bridge on Hwy
44--it was with Canada Geese in the river-but the best views were
downstream from the bridge on River View Dr.
Weir Dam:
Am. Wigeon 15
Bufflehead 40
Ring-necked Duck 4
Rooty Branch beaver pond--mostly iced over
Mallard 40
Hwy 44 between Hwy 421 and the state line:
Am. Kestrel 1
Musick's Campground:
No birds on the water
White-crowned Sparrow 4
Middlebrook Lake:
Ring-necked Duck 25
Hooded Merganser 75
Coot 5
Ring-billed Gull 350
Many of the waterfowl and the gull numbers are reasonable
estimates--birds were coming and going while we scanned and tried to
count. This was especially true pf the Ducks at Paddle Creek and the Gulls.
