This Tundra Swan has been along the Holston River at Christian Bend in Hawkins County for the past week. According to Trudy and Harold Smith, residents of the Christian Bend community, Harold saw the bird last weekend (probably Sunday) when it flew into a large river bottom pasture land. Since the bird could only be viewed from a great distance, Trudy called me Friday evening to discuss the bird. Carolyn and went to the area Saturday (3/28) and made the digiscope photo with a 60X spotting scope. The bird was about 900 yards from the telescope, which was on a river bluff 180 feet above the river. The Tundra Swan is a rare transient or winter visitor to the area. Susan Hubley reported one 11 May 2007 at Rogersville in Hawkins County. The Smith's will welcome subscribers of this net Sunday if you will call in advance. They not only would like to make sure they will be home but know when visitors are expect. You will need detailed directions. They do not have an address number displayed nor a mailbox. Their home is new. You will have considerable difficulty getting an ID on this bird without the use of a spotting scope. Call the Smith's at (423) 923-0419 if you wish to visit. It is of note that a GPS or personal navigation system will get you to the Christian Bend community but it does not accurately locate their current address, perhaps missing it by nearly a mile. The Smith's subscribed to Bristol-Birds Net on Friday evening. Let's go birding . . . Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
