Reminder that the Herndon Club's third nightjar survey will be tomorrow evening, Tuesday, June 22. Meet at 8:30 p.m. at the U.S. Forest Service Work Center on Hwy 19E going south of Elizabethton. Go beyond the Lone Star Steak House and the America Inn--the Work Center is next on the right. Leaders are Joe McGuinnes and Kim Stroud. This count will be on Walnut Mountain--expect Whip-poor-wills and Ghost Fireflies. We will form a carpool caravan to the survey area and begin the count at the first count site about 9:30 p.m. There are 10 count sights and counting is done for 6 minutes at each sight. The total counting sequence takes about one and one half to two hours. On the Milligan-Gap Creek area count last night, participants heard 3 Chuck-will's-widows and 7 Whip-poor-wills, a Screech Owl, and a Great Horned Owl. A total of 10 birders participated on the two surveys that were run last night. Roy Knispel, Pres. Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter, TOS Phone: 423-202-7802
