Burt Hale telephone today to report that a Loggerhead Shrike arrived this morning at his feeders on Sharps Hollow Rd. north of Bluff City in Sullivan Co. How is that for a new yard bird ? Since he and Loraine have been putting out orange slices for the Northern Mockingbirds, it took a little awareness before they fully picked noticed one bird on the ground, underneath a bush, was a shrike. The shirke had a dead bird impaled on a thorn in the bush. It was also having lunch ! Of course, he explained, the feeder birds were not frequenting the thistle feeder on that side of the house. They had moved to safer feeders out of sight of the shrike. There you have an ultimate snowstorm bird feeder ! Let's watch birds..... Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
