To celebrate April 15 and the completion of filing tax returns, this =
afternoon Mary Evans, CPA, Mike Evans and Mary Erwin birded Musick's =
Campground and the weir below South Holston Dam. At about 4:00 pm on =
Hwy 394 between Blountville and Hwy 19, Mary Evans and Mary Erwin saw a =
Broad-winged hawk and pulled off the road for a better look at it. It =
was maneuvering to catch a thermal, flapping, then tucking its wings in =
close, and finally soared on. Maybe the bird Wallace saw later in the =
evening in Bristol?

At Musick's at 4:30 pm, we saw 1 Spotted sandpiper, many Purple martins, =
Barn swallows, N. Rough-winged swallows, and Tree swallows.

Moving on to the weir and Osceola Island at 5:00 pm, we saw 6 Amer. =
wigeon, several small groups of Bufflehead (mostly females) and heard =
Phoebes. An interesting feature on the back side of the island is a =
beaver slide worn deep into the bank.

Returning to Musick's about 6:45 pm for better light angles, we saw 1 =
Common loon and heard it call as dusk approached. We also saw 6 Eared =
grebes in breeding plumage flashing their golden plumes, a few =
Pied-billed grebes, about 20 Ring-billed gulls, 1 Caspian tern, 30 =
Double-crested cormorants.
