Ten Short-billed Dowitchers found May 18, 2006 at Quarry Bog in Shady Valley, Johnson County, TN is a new species which has never been recorded from Shady. The birds were observed by J. Merrill Lynch, assistant director for protection, The Nature Conservancy North Carolina Chapter. His office is in Durham, NC. Lynch recently spent a couple of days birding in the valley with Gabby Call, director of protection for the Tennessee Chapter of TNC out of Nashville. She sent me the short annotated checklist. His report on the dowitchers reads: "6 seen along edge of shallow pool at Quarry Bog and 4 birds at QB at beaverpond, both 18 May; birds in full alternate (breeding) plumage." Other species of interest for May 18 included: Greater Yellowlegs: 2 seen at Quarry Bog. Pectoral Sandpiper: Flock of about 6 seen in plowed field near Quarry Bog. Let's go birding......
