Musick's Lakeside Campground
South Holston Lake (near Bristol), Sullivan Co., TN / Washington Co., VA.

.
Sunday afternoon around 3:45 PM Sam Cross, Ed Talbott, and I observed a
Sabine's Gull in juvenile plumage at Musick's Lakeside Campground. It was
making long North / South passes above South Holston Lake, crossing the
Virginia / Tennessee state line several times.

Wallace Coffey responded to my call quickly as did Bert and Loraine Hale and
later Janice Martin. Janice brought her video camera which was used by Ed
Talbott to capture photo documentation of the bird.

A webpage with three (3) pages of about 15 pictures can be visited at:

http://www.bcplnet.org/birdclub/SGull/SGull1.htm

It was absent for about an hour when it flew out of sight into Washington
County, VA. It later arrived back near Musick's Campground. It was last
seen around 6:30PM.

The species is very in Virginia or Tennessee. Its appearance here may have
been influenced by on going Atlantic Ocean storm activity. Kenn Kaufman's,
"Lives of North American Birds," states that each fall a few of these birds
(mostly young) show up on interior lakes.

'Til we bird again
