The Shady Valley Christmas Bird Count which was scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 20) has been canceled. A makeup date has not been determined. Rob Biller (count compiler) and I talked about conditions this morning and decided that the potential for very poor conditions by Saturday morning were such that the count should be canceled. The weather, couple with several birders having to change plans and not participate, were factors leading to the decision. People living in Shady Valley reported this morning that the ground cover of snow is 5 to 7 inches with more expected in the afternoon and evening forecast. Back roads are snow covered and slick. Conditions for thawing are not encouraging. The temperature at 11 a.m. is 20.7 with the low last night at 19.7. Some are reporting that the mountain roads leading to and from the valley require 4-wheel drive. Take care. Stay warm and cozy. Enjoy the holidays. Merry Christmas.....
