Bristol Area Birders,

The birding has been a little slow lately so I've had time to work on a little
project
concerning the local Christmas Bird Count data. I was surprised to find so
much data on
the Nat. Audubon site for the Breaks Park during the 1980's. The highest
species count
ever was in 1983 with 61 species and the highest total bird count was in 1985
with 2,371
birds counted. Notable finds were the 6 Red Crossbills in 1987, the Redhead in
1990, no
Northern Bobwhites ever, two BG-Gnatcatchers in 1995, the decline in House
Sparrows and
Purple Finches since the 1980s, and the absence of Meadowlarks or Horned Larks
in recent
years. Both Chipping and Lincoln's Sparrows were new to the count last year.

I also had a chance to computerize the Blackford (Russell Co.) CBC data into one
spreadsheet. Records were set last year with 68 species and 4,561 total birds.
 Surprises
on the Blackford list included the 18 Common Redpolls in 2000, only one Hermit
Thrush ever
(1998), large numbers of both species of vulture in 2002, a Northern Goshawk in
1999, and
the consistent five or six Golden Eagles found on Beartown Mountain each year.

I hope to continue adding more local data as I find the time. Next will be the
Wise Co.
VA, Tazewell Co. Va, and McDowell Co. WV data.

CBC data is found for every count at http://www.audubon.org/bird/cbc/index.html
- this is
the National Audubon Site. Lots of good info on this site.

Good Birding,
